In the Wolds there is horseback riding, cycling, fishing, and walking paths. In Lincoln and the market towns of Boston, Spalding, Louth, and Stamford you will find historical churches, guild halls, museums, castles, and you can shop in the small shops that line narrow cobblestone streets.
This is Bomber County. That's because there were so many RAF airfields here during World War II. If you enjoy vintage air craft, you can see Lancaster bombers, Spitfires, and Hurricanes.
Your choices of places to stay are varied. You can choose hotels, cottages, bed and breakfast, and you can even rent a caravan at caravan resorts on the coast.
If you are visiting England from abroad, you will probably start your journey in the wonderful city of London. However, there is so much more to see in England than London. Lincoln is just a couple hours train ride from London. Traveling around Lincolnshire gives you the chance to get a feel for real English life--a chance to experience the flavor of the country.
A lot of people think that Lincolnshire is flat. Part of it is flat and that area is called the Fens. Much of the land in the Fens was once marshland but it has been drained by a network of canals and this has resulted in very rich farmland which is used to grow vegetables and flower bulbs.
Another part of Lincolnshire to the north is called the Wolds. It stretches from the Humber River to Spilsby. It is an area of beautiful rolling hills. This area is great for walking, cycling, and horseback riding.
There is much evidence in Lincolnshire of the Romans who occupied the area from the first century to the fourth century and possibly the beginning of the fifth century. Some stonework can be seen in Lincoln which was a very important Roman stonghold. Many of the highways and roads today follow the original Roman roads.
